Aussie Actors strike on US ads

94c7.jpgMORE than 10,000 Australian-based actors will refuse work on commercials being filmed for overseas markets after launching strike action last night over the scrapping of a minimum conditions deal with producers.

…The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) members were to begin the strike action at midnight after failing to convince the Screen Producers Association of Australia to put a new Offshore Commercials Agreement in place.

…SPAA scrapped the existing agreement, saying the local industry could no longer compete for work on US commercials against other countries, including Canada and New Zealand. .

…Simon Whipp from the MEAA said the strike was a first for Australian actors but the union was fighting to protect their rights and incomes.
