…Indigenous actress Frances Djulibing, who played the lead female role in Rolf de Heer’s award-winning film Ten Canoes, said a not-for-profit agency was urgently needed to represent indigenous actors, singers and dancers.
…Casting director Nora Saliba said a group of actors, including Djulibing and David Gulpilil, had approached her and other non-indigenous film professionals to help draw up plans for a not-for-profit agency.
…She said the agency could put any profits back into sending indigenous young people to acting or film schools, or to training courses in behind-the-scenes work as gaffers, translators or casting co-ordinators.
…Veteran actor Jack Thompson, who also starred in Australia, has thrown his support behind plans for the agency, saying few city-based actors’ agents had the time or expertise.
