Happy Birthday to the Actors Centre Australia (ACA), celebrating twenty-one
years in the nineteenth-century heritage-listed church it calls home.
The Sydney-based private college opened its doors on June 27, 1987 and provides
all levels with both full- and part-time training. When Creative Director
Dean Carey co-founded the school with fellow actor Stan Kouros, they
envisioned a personal and nurturing environment to act as an alternative to
some of the larger institutions such as the National Institute of Dramatic
Art.
ACA’s most popular program, the Journey, is a two and a half year
full-time professional course that teaches, among other things, performance
technique and theatre history. Their unconventional curriculum and intimate
style does come at a price, however, as the Journey will cost an actor
almost $25,000. While the ACA is looking into a government loan program to
help ease students’ financial burden, there is no guarantee that such a plan
will be approved.
